Just after midnight struck, Delaney Nyenhuis found herself a state medalist.

The Oregon junior was the Panthers’ lone podium finisher at the WIAA Division 1 state meet on Friday, June 2 and Saturday, June 3, at Veterans Memorial Stadium in La Crosse.

“It was a good, hard race,” said Nyenhuis, who placed third in the 800-meter run. “But it worked. It was amazing to get on the podium. That felt incredible knowing the work you put in paid off at the biggest meet of the year.”

Division 1 competition on Friday was scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m., but the start of the meet was delayed two hours because of lightning. After roughly 30 minutes of competition, there was another two-hour weather delay. The meet resumed at approximately 9:30 p.m. and concluded after 1 a.m.

The 800 run was one of four events that took place after midnight in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

State Track

Fans wave their phones after the lights went out at the WIAA Division 1 state meet Friday, June 2, at Veterans Memorial Stadium in La Crosse. The meet was postponed multiple times and concluded early Saturday morning.

“The race delays messed with your head,” Nyenhuis said. “But you just have to disregard it, play it to your advantage. We weren’t in the sun. We got to run in this perfect temperature.”

Nyenhuis clocked in with a time of 2 minutes, 15.3 seconds to place third.

Mount Horeb junior Abigail Sadler ran away with the 800 title with a time of 2:11.64. Cedarburg freshman Charlize-Trinity McKenzie earned runner-up honors with a time of 2:13.56. Nyenhuis was seeded ninth with a sectional time of 2:19.15.

Nyenhuis said her goal was to podium, but wasn’t expecting to shave off four seconds.

“I just wanted to run my hardest and stick with people,” Nyenhuis said.

Nyenhuis was bunched up in a pack after the first lap, but was in a comfortable third-place position down the home stretch of the race.
