For many years before I retired, I worked as an environmental, health and safety professional for a number of industries in the Portland metro area. There were a few times I had the unfortunate experience of working for an employer or manager who was not entirely committed to fully complying with environmental, health and safety regulations. Because their stance was not only illegal but risked the well-being of their workers and community, as well as my own credentials and credibility, I would quickly make the decision that it was not the right place for me and begin to find new employment.
Between the time I made this decision and the time I actually left, did I quit showing up? Did I refuse to meet my commitments every day I was collecting a paycheck? Absolutely not. You see, I had something called integrity. I had made a commitment, not only to my employer but to the employees and the state regulators, to do my best work every day.
It is ridiculous that Oregonians are not shown the respect they deserve from the Republican senators who are more interested in their inane theatrics than actually doing the work they committed to do and were voted into office to do, (“Senate Republicans say they’re willing to return on final day of legislative session to avoid Oregon government shutdown,” May 23).
When will our elected officials set their game playing aside and show up to meet their sworn oath to their constituents and all other Oregonians?
