Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR 550) - With details emerging from a pair of signings made by the Buffalo Bills earlier this week, general manager Brandon Beane gave an update on the team’s current salary cap situation for the 2023 season.

In the offseason, even though each team has a maximum roster of 90 players, only the top-51 salary cap hits count against each team’s cap. With that in mind, Beane told reporters on Tuesday the team currently has a little over $4 million in available cap space.
However, he is also projecting them to be $3-5 million over the cap when they have to cut down to their final 53-man roster, and all of those salaries count. The general manager said that’s projecting who will make the roster, while also considering guarantees, and with no injuries.
"We’re still going to have to do some moves at some point to create more room,” said Beane on Tuesday. "Even though today, on the top 51, we have a little over [$4 million], we really don’t."
All of this is on the heels of the team’s two latest roster moves, both of which had a big impact on the cap numbers.
Defensive tackle Ed Oliver was inked to a four-year contract extension on Monday, while pass rusher Leonard Floyd signed his free agent contract with the Bills on Tuesday.

Oliver’s deal, with details first reported by Pro Football Talk, is worth a total of $68 million over the next five years (he still had one year remaining on his current deal), and includes $45 million guaranteed. However, according to Spotrac, his cap hit, which was originally scheduled to be $10.8 million on his old deal, is now only $4.978 million in 2023 and $9.25 million in 2024.
Floyd’s deal, reported by ESPN NFL insider Field Yates, includes three void years. That means the Bills are able to spread the money out over four years, but Floyd is only actually under contract for one season. With that in mind, his cap hit in 2023 will be just over $2.623 million.
All of this leaves the Bills with the roughly $4 million in current operating space.
With that, Beane will still keep the door open for any more potential adds, but it would have to be at a bargain price.
"I’m gonna look, and if somebody wants to come for cheap, come on down," he said.
