Drunk driving, autos towed: Brainard and Miles roads
While waiting on a tow truck behind a car stopped in the roadway on Brainard just north of Miles Road at 11:50 p.m. May 25, a sergeant was flagged down by a passing motorist who said they were on the phone with 9-1-1 about a possibly impaired driver who was soon found in a 2022 Mercedes-Benz SUV and stopped after making a wide turn from Brainard eastbound onto Miles.
The driver, a Kirtland man, 36, and his passenger, a North Ridgeville woman, were both chewing gum, which he tossed onto the pavement when the officer asked him about it, still detecting a faint odor of alcohol. The driver said he was coming back from an Ohio City bar where he said he’d had three drinks and a shot of tequila.
He registered a .116 blood-alcohol content on the Breathalyzer, over the Ohio legal limit of .08 BAC. The SUV was towed and he was released from the Solon jail after posting a $1,500 personal bond.
Use of headlights (high beams), weaving, drunk driving, autos towed: Jackson, Brainard roads
After a patrol officer signaled an oncoming northbound 2018 Hyundai Tucson to dim its brights at 11:27 p.m. May 25, the driver, a Warrensville Heights woman, 48, did so briefly and then turned them back on as she continued. When stopped, she explained that other cars’ headlights were brighter than hers, adding that she had an upcoming eye appointment.
She said she’d had nothing to drink and ate some candy when the officer said the odor of alcohol was “extreme and obvious.” She later said she’d lied after police marked her Breathalyzer test as a refusal when she twice stopped breathing into the machine. Police noted she also had a previous drunk driving conviction in Niagara Falls, NY in 2014. She was charged and given a courtesy ride home from the Solon jail.
Improper display of license plates, expired plates, display of lighted lights, drunk driving (under the age of 21), no operator’s license, autos towed: Emery, Brainard roads
Noticing a southbound 2012 Chevy Malibu with no visible registration at 1:17 a.m. May 25 on Brainard, a patrol officer followed as the driver, a Warrensville Heights woman, 20, turned onto Jackson Drive. She then pulled briefly into a driveway, waiting for the cruiser to pass before doubling back the other way.
She reportedly turned her headlights out but the officer noticed brake lights in the Temple Emanuel El parking lot, where she said her friend had her driver’s license. She then recited the wrong Social Security number, although she soon handed over her actual SS card and state I.D.
On the Breathalyzer, she registered below the legal limit of .08 blood-alcohol content but was charged with operating a vehicle impaired (OVI) because she was under the age of 21 and therefore not allowed to drink at all. She was given a court date and a courtesy ride home.

This came after a patrol officer saw him driving eastbound without headlights, which were turned on by the time he was stopped near the Beechmont Country Club.
He wound up registering a .089 blood-alcohol content on the Breathalyzer, over the legal limit of .08 BAC.
Lighted lights required, seat belt law, driving under suspension, open container, warrants: Harvard Road, Orange Place
After noticing a Toyota RAV4 without its headlights on at 10:35 p.m. May 28 -- and whose occupants were not wearing seat belts -- a patrol officer stopped the car at the I-271 entrance ramp from Harvard Road.
The driver, a Bedford man, 34, had a suspended license but denied he’d been drinking at all. He was also advised about a misdemeanor warrant still pending in Cleveland Heights.
His passenger, a Cleveland man, 29, was out of range for pickup on an outstanding warrant for a weapons offense in Denver, Colo., eventually claimed ownership of a largely-full bottle of D’Usse cognac and several disposable shot glasses in the car that the officer smelled. He was cited for the open container.
The car was turned over to the owner, a Bedford woman.
