UPDATE: Opelousas Police identify person injured in Wednesday night shooting

UPDATE 6/2/23 11 A.M.: The person struck by gunfire Wednesday night in the Opelousas shooting has been identified as Kennie Belvin, 30, of Opelousas, authorities said.

Opelousas Police have confirmed that Belvin exchanged gun fire with another adult male perpetrator. Investigators say they are confident that they have identified everyone involved in the shooting.

Opelousas Police say that the motive for the shooting is still being investigated and the identity of the other person involved will be released after a warrant has been signed for his arrest. They also say Belvin will be arrested once medically cleared to be incarcerated.

ORIGINAL STORY: OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) – Police on the scene of a shooting that left one injured.

According to Opelousas Police, there was a shooting that happened at South St. and Cane St. just before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night. One male hit by gunfire and transported to a local hospital for treatment for non life threatening injuries.

An initial investigation shows that the victim may have been involved in an exchange of gunfire with another subject. A weapon was recovered on scene and the investigation is on going. Opelousas Police Chief Graig LeBlanc tells us there is a suspect in custody.
