By Vince D’Writer: Headlining the June 10th Golden Boy Promotions card that will start airing 8 p.m. ET/ 1 a.m. BST live on DAZN, Jaime Munguia will make his debut at super-middleweight as he will face three-time world title challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko (14-4, 10 KOs) at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, California.
This super-middleweight matchup is a pivotal bout for both boxers as Munguia needs to make a statement by winning in impressive fashion, and Derevyanchenko needs to secure a win in order to get his career back on track.
A product of Tijuana, Mexico, Jaime Munguia made his pro boxing debut at the age of 16 as he scored a second round TKO victory over Manuel Mora on July 13, 2013. Five years later Munguia beat Sadam Ali and won the WBO light middleweight title.
After defending his WBO light-middleweight title a total of five times, Jaime Munguia decided to vacate the title and move up to 160. He went 7-0 as a middleweight, but unfortunately he never received an opportunity to fight for a middleweight world title.
Now Munguia plans on making a statement against a tough opponent as he’s out to prove that he’s ready to face the elite in the middleweight and super-middleweight divisions. While Munguia enters the bout determined to make a statement, his opponent will attempt to use the June 10th opportunity to get back on track.
During his amateur days, the Ukrainian boxer Sergiy Derevyanchenko compiled an impressive record of 390-20. He turned pro in July 2014, and started his professional career with 12-straight victories.
Derevyanchenko would earn the opportunity to fight for the vacant IBF middleweight title back in 0ctober 2018, but he lost to Daniel Jacobs by way of split decision. A year later Derevyanchenko received another shot at a world title, but once again he came up short as he lost to Gennadiy “GGG” Golovkin.
In September 2020, Derevyanchenko was the challenger in a bout for the WBC middleweight title, but unfortunately the third time wasn’t the charm, as he lost by unanimous decision to the defending champion Jermall Charlo.
Now after losing 4 out of his 6 previous fights, the 37-year-old Sergiy Derevyanchenko looks to put a halt to Munguia’s plans and execute his own agenda by earning a win over a top contender. The Ukrainian boxer has trained hard and he’s completely focused on winning.
By Vince D’Writer: Sergiy Derevyanchenko is a seasoned technical fighter, but he has a habit of getting off to a slow start. His June 10th opponent, the 26-year-old Jaime Munguia is a strong and very skilled high volume puncher on offense, but his defense is suspect.
Jaime Munguia (41-0, 33 KOs) wants to make a statement to grab the attention of the elite, and he has a path to accomplishing that particular goal. Daniel Jacobs, Triple G, and Jermall Charlo all hold victories against Derevyanchenko, but they all won by decision.
If Jaime Munguia can become the first boxer to stop Derevyanchenko, then that’s definitely an accomplishment that can be highlighted on his resume. Munguia feels like he’s well prepared and ready for a clash that he labels as being the hardest fight of his career.
“Like I told everyone, we worked hard this camp,” Munguia said during the final presser. “We’re ready to put on a show. Expect fireworks. There’s going to be a lot of punches thrown, a lot of emotions, and we’ll see you on Saturday, and of course Viva Mexico.”
