Fabius, N.Y. — Onondaga County Sheriff’s Air 1 helicopter, dozens of firefighters and police spent nearly an hour Sunday evening searching for a woman, her 7-year-old daughter and their two dogs who got lost in the woods Sunday night at Tinker Falls, 911 dispatchers said.
The woman called 911 at 6:13 p.m. to say she was lost in the woods with her daughter and dogs.
“She said they took the Baby Blue Trail and followed the water downward, and they’re in a tree either above or near the water,” a 911 dispatcher said. The woman said she was wearing a navy blue jacket and her 7-year-old had a pink jacket on; both had black snow pants on, the dispatcher said. At one point in the search, firefighters said they were notified the woman was in the water.
Air 1 hovered over the falls, while Apulia, Fabius, Tully, Lafayette, Nedrow and Truxton volunteer firefighters, state police and sheriff’s deputies worked together to look for the mother, daughter and their dogs. Smith Ambulance stood nearby and 911 notified Onondaga County Emergency Management as the search continued daylight started to disappear.
Eventually, an Apulia fire chief spotted the mother, child and dogs at 7:04 p.m., firefighters said. They were above the falls, 911 dispatchers said.
The woman and child were reportedly “very cold,” dispatchers said, but search crews walked them out to safety.
Tinker Falls is located near the Onondaga-Cortland county border in the Labrador Hollow Unique Area.
