VVS and Oneida combining, other boys lacrosse changes

VERONA, N.Y. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – The sport of lacrosse has its origins in the Oneida area but despite that fact, Oneida High School has not had a boys’ lacrosse team to speak of. That changes with the 2023 spring sports season, as the Indians will combine with their Route 5 rival, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, to compete in Section III Class C.

The Red Devils, whose program began in the 2014 spring season with a 15-1 win over Notre Dame, have struggled for numbers the last few years, including last season when they finished 0-3 overall and were forced to cancel ten games after blowout losses to Syracuse and Fulton to start the season left them with too many injuries to field a team.

Among other changes in Section III boys’ lacrosse, Chittenango, Cazenovia and Morrisville-Eaton high schools will also be combining their efforts in Class C and Christian Brothers Academy will move from Class C, where they were the runners-up in 2022, to Class B based on their success in previous seasons.
