Paul Finebaum shreds Deion Sanders’ coaching in Year 2 at Colorado: ‘It’s coming undone’

Colorado suffered its first defeat of the 2024 college football season last Saturday when they left Lincoln with a disappointing 28-10 loss at Nebraska .

So far this season, the Buffaloes have been flawed in the same areas they were last year in the program’s first season under Deion Sanders . That includes struggling to run the ball and protect their star quarterback Shedeur Sanders . It’s that reality that led to a bold question being asked to college football analyst Paul Finebaum on Wednesday morning: How long will Deion Sanders be in charge at Colorado?

“Not long,” Finebaum said Wednesday morning on SportsCenter. “You can see it’s coming undone here. And nobody’s persecuting or prosecuting Deion Sanders, we’re simply telling the truth. And the truth is his team is terrible.

“They barely got by the first game against North Dakota State , and they were literally run out of Lincoln, Nebraska,” Finebaum added. “They were down by 28 points at halftime. The score really made it look close but it wasn’t close. It was a complete and total beatdown.”

After starting last season 3-0, Colorado ended the year with a 4-8 record in the Pac-12. Now in the Big 12 Conference with a team that once again saw massive roster turnover through the transfer portal this offseason, the Buffs may have the same issues as the 2023 team.

“And what we were promised this year would be different about Coach Prime is the same. He has a great quarterback in his son, Shedeur Sanders , [but] he has a terrible offensive line and I genuinely feel sorry for Shedeur because he’s running for his life. That’s not fair to him and his NFL future,” Finebaum explained.

Shedeur Sanders was sacked six times against Nebraska on Saturday after being sacked seven times in last year’s matchup with the Cornhuskers. Tied with Old Dominion ‘s Grant Wilson last season as the most-sacked quarterback in the FBS.

Nebraska is also in the midst of its second season with a new head coach after Matt Rhule took over the program. But early this season they’ve have already shown signs of improvement, particularly in comparison to the Buffaloes. As it will be fascinating to see how the remainder of Colorado’s season looks in year two under Sanders and his future overall with the program.

“And the future really is very bleak [for Colorado]. I think they’ll get by this week on the road [vs. Colorado State ], but if they don’t, you’re going to start hearing a lot more. And Deion can start being Deion even more because he’s going to need to do something because his coaching is terrible right now,” Finebaum concluded.
