As the 2024 Hawaii high school football season closes its fourth week, the Hawaii On3 Massey Ratings Top 25 as of September 9 has changed slightly. Five of the top ten spots have new occupants, while 13 of the 15 spots from 11-25 changed.
These movements and the fact that only three of the top 25 teams are undefeated as of writing highlight a competitive football scene in ‘The Aloha State.’
The On3 Massey Ratings , officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory. According to the model, two teams from Hawaii rank in the nationwide top 100.

After a humbling 33-7 defeat against Bishop Gorman, the Red Raiders scored victories against Konawaena (13-0) and Waimea (66-7). Next will be a showdown against Mater Dei, regarded as the country’s top high school football team.

The Crusaders lost their first two games this season by a total margin of three points. But since then, they’ve dominated Kamehameha Schools Maui (49-0), Farrington (24-7), and Kamehameha High School (24-7). St. Louis could make it three in a row if they win against Damien Memorial School.

Tough luck descended on the Warriors after losing by 30 points to St. Louis. Before that humbling defeat, Kamehameha High School had been on a roll after wins over Waipahu (44-6) and California’s Warren Bears. Kamehameha can bounce back against Punahou and St. Louis, their assignments over the next three games.

The Buff n Blue has been on a roller coaster to start the 2024 Hawaii high school football season. In addition to victories against Konawaena and Iolani, they’ve also suffered defeats against James Campbell and California’s Sierra Canyon. Despite their record, a challenging strength of schedule keeps them in the top ten.

The Hurricanes stormed through their first three assignments, defeating Waianae (28-7), Lahainaluna (42-12), and Kapaa (35-16). Kapolei will return to action close to one month after their last game, facing James Campbell.

The Marauders scored only six points in their loss to Kamehameha. It’s a far cry from the 49 points they scored in their first two games. A grueling stretch awaits Waipahu because they will face Mililani, Kapolei, Kahuku, James Campbell, and Farrington.

It’s the Governors’ turn to be on the losing end after putting up only seven points against St. Louis. Before that game, they limited Kapaa to 12 points and blanked Rancho Mirage while putting up 42 points.

Suddenly, the Raiders couldn’t find their game after back-to-back losses to Palos Verdes and Punahou. The defeat against the Buff n Blue is disappointing because they didn’t put points on the board. Iolani must rediscover the momentum that led them to victories against Kalani and Leilehua.
