Since Deion Sanders became the head coach at Colorado , there has been a great deal of attention paid to him and the program. Now, much of that has turned into criticism of how Sanders is running the program.
Mike Sando of The Athletic spoke to two different NFL executives, both of whom were critical of the program and blasted Deion Sanders, suggesting that he’s just trying to promote his son and the team’s quarterback Shedeur Sanders .

“Now, he looks like a guy who lacks detail, his hard-edged style is running people out of there and he is just really promoting his son,” one executive said .
Another was critical of the style of play that Colorado has had over the past two seasons. In particular, the executive was critical of Sanders for not paying attention to details like offensive line play.

“There is nothing wrong with what we said last year, that he tells the truth and connects with players,” the second executive said. “But there’s a lot more that goes into it than connecting with the players and telling the truth to the media about the state of college athletics. A lot more goes into winning, like blocking and tackling and protecting the passer and having the quarterback not scramble so frequently that everything is off timing.”
This is a shift from how many executives looked at the program as recently as a season ago. Then, the narrative was more around his relationship with players. However, as Colorado struggles on the field, there are growing concerns with the state of the program.
The Colorado program went 4-8 under Deion Sanders in his first season. That was a notable improvement from the season before he got there, when the Buffaloes were 1-11. However, after struggling with an FCS opponent in Week 1 and losing 28-10 to Nebraska in Week 2, Colorado seems to have a lot of the same issues it had last season. That includes poor offensive line play, an inability to run the ball, and inconsistent defense.
Paul Finebaum predicts Deion Sanders will leave Colorado after this season
Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter , Colorado’s two biggest stars, are expected to move to the NFL after this season. With that, analyst Paul Finebaum shared that he expects Deion Sanders to leave Colorado after the season too.
“I don’t think Deion Sanders will be there next year,” Finebaum said .
“This season, when they fail to go to a bowl game, he’s going to look around and try to find an exit strategy. No more Travis [Hunter], no more Shedeur [Sanders] — what’s the motivation for him to beat himself up? So, I think enjoy the Deion show. It will be playing somewhere next year. It may be off Broadway. It may be on Broadway. But it won’t be in Boulder.”
