Paul Finebaum: Michigan has ‘impossible path’ to College Football Playoff: ‘I think they’re done’

Michigan suffered defeat for the first time since the 2022 College Football Playoff semifinal on Saturday, losing to Texas 31-12 in the Big House.

The Wolverines never lead the Longhorns and were unable to establish the rushing attack while turning the ball over three times to Texas during the Week 2 matchup. The loss ended their 23-game win streak at home, but is the season over for Michigan before they play a single conference game? Paul Finebaum seems to think so.

“This is where I think the season really goes haywire for them, because they had to beat somebody,” Finebaum said on SportsCenter Sunday morning. “They had to make enough, they had to pull an upset, I think, to get to the playoffs. Texas was one of those schools and now, there’s an impossible path, quite frankly. I don’t want to write this entire season off because they were playing one of the three or four best teams in the country yesterday, but they were at home, and they were so ineffectual.

“So this program has virtually no shot, I think, in making the playoff. They can have a decent season under Sherrone Moore, his first year as the head coach but I think any hopes of repeating, any hopes of getting back, I think they’re done.”

In this case, Michigan is thankful for what the new-look Big Ten conference has to offer. Thanks to their schedule, Michigan still has time to pull an upset out of the bag before the end of the season.

They host a hot No. 13 USC team on Sept. 21 but doesn’t face another (currently) ranked opponent until they host No. 7 Oregon in Novemeber. The Game looms on Nov. 30 in the regular season finale. The rivalry game could have major implications for playoff seedings if Michigan is able to win either of their previous matchups against the Trojans or Ducks.

For now, Michigan will have to find a way to get back on its feet in Week 3 when they host Arkansas State. Kickoff is scheduled for Noon ET on Saturday live on the Big Ten Network.
