PUTTING IN YOUR APPLICATION. AN EFFORT TO FEED KIDS WHILE SCHOOL IS OUTTAKES TO THE STREETS IN THE METRO TOMORROW. BUT THE SALVATION ARMY STILL NEEDS VOLUNTEERS FOR THEIR KIDS, CREWS AND KITCHEN THIS SUMMER. KETV, NEWSWATCH SEVEN’S JOEY SAFCHIK TELLS US WHY A FEW HOURS OF YOUR TIME CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE. MARGIE SMITH IS EAGER TO HIT THE ROAD. IT’S HER SIXTH SUMMER VOLUNTEERING IN THE KIDS CRUISING KITCHEN. NO ONE SHOULD GO HUNGRY IN OMAHA, NEBRASKA, FOR GOSH SAKES. AND THE SALVATION ARMY NEEDS MORE. MARGIE’S WITH SEVERAL VOLUNTEER SLOTS STILL UNFILLED A DAY BEFORE ROLLOUT. THAT’S A FUN WAY FOR US TO MEET A VERY PRACTICAL NEED IN THE LIVES OF OUR YOUNGEST NEIGHBORS. LAST YEAR, KIDS CREWS KITCHEN SERVED 10,200 MEALS, AND THIS YEAR THEY’RE EXPECTING A 3 TO 7% INCREASE. OUR NEED CONTINUES TO RISE YEAR OVER YEAR, WHICH IS TROUBLESOME. THE SALVATION ARMY SAYS FOOD INSECURE PLAGUES 1 IN 6. NEBRASKA SCHOOL CHILDREN. THE IDEA OF FEEDING HUNGRY KIDS IS WONDERFUL AND THINK EVERYONE CAN GET BEHIND THAT. BUT IT TAKES HANDS AND FEET OF OUR COMMUNITY TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN. FEET ON THE PEDAL AND HANDS ON THE WHEEL AND HANDING OUT TRAYS OF HOT FOOD. I GET GOOSEBUMPS WITH EVERY SLICE THAT I SERVE BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, THAT MIGHT BE THEIR ONLY MEAL OF THE DAY, COVERING SIX ROUTES, FIVE DAYS A WEEK DOES TAKE A SMALL ARMY. Margie Smith is eager to hit the road for her sixth summer volunteering in the Kids Cruisin' Kitchen. "No one should go hungry in Omaha, Nebraska, for gosh sake," said Smith.The Salvation Army said they need more Margies, with several volunteer slots still unfilled, a day before rolling out the food trucks. "It’s a fun way for us to meet a very practical need in the lives of our youngest neighbors," said Major Adam Moore, the Omaha city commander with the Salvation Army. Last year, the Kids Cruisin’ Kitchen served about 10,200 meals. This year, they are expecting a 3-7% increase. "Our need continues to rise year over year, which is troublesome," said Moore. The Salvation Army said food insecurity plagues one in six Nebraska school children. "The idea of feeding hungry kids is wonderful, and I think everyone can get behind that. But it takes the hands and feet of our community to make this happen," said Moore. Feet on the pedal and hands giving out trays of hot food. Covering six routes, five days a week, said Moore, does take a small army."I get goosebumps with every slice that I serve because, you know, that might be their only meal of the day," said Smith. "Four hours is nothing for making a kid's stomach full."Margie said her heart is full at the end of every shift."Take a look at how good you have it, and look at what you're doing for someone that doesn't," said Smith.
