“What you're looking at right here in the upper right part of the screen are going to be some taillights,” and with that Omaha Police Detective Patrick Dempsey walked KETV Newswatch 7 through video taken just after a deadly shooting last summer.
The video isn’t very long, but Dempsey hopes it is enough to help lead to the person who killed 31-year-old Pierre Hightower.
Hightower was shot just before midnight June 3, 2022, outside the South Side Terrace Apartments near 30th and “T” streets.
Dempsey said there was a crowd of people hanging out in the area when a fight broke out.
“It's still unclear exactly what started the fight. There were approximately 40 to 50 people, many of whom we have still yet to talk to or who will come forward to speak with police,” said Dempsey.
One reason people may not come forward, Dempsey said, is because people knew each other.
“A lot of people down there were friends, family, and that may be why it's held so tight to the chest as a lot of these people involved were friendly with each other,” Dempsey explained.
He said investigators have talked with a lot of people, but not all of the people there.
Dempsey is hoping that since pretty much everybody has a camera phone, someone has better video of that night.
It doesn’t have to be of the shooting, or even of the fight that led to it.
“They may have pictures that they took with friends. They have may have videos of, you know, them in their cars hanging out. They may identify some of the people that were there,” Dempsey continued, “We have a lot of witnesses. We have a lot of people that have knowledge of this homicide, and we ask that they come forward and be truthful about what happened that day.”
Besides just doing the right things, Dempsey said what also may help lead to more information, is an enhanced Crime Stoppers reward of $25,000.
