Infrastructure updates stretching from the Old Market to Blackstone will change the city's parking infrastructure, starting in the next few months: lower initial rates, no more time limits, and changes to parking garages.Park Omaha says its most notable change is lowering initial street parking meters to $1 for the first two to three hours. The rate will progressively increase the longer a vehicle stays parked, eliminating time restrictions."We want to get away from criminalizing or penalizing," parking and mobility manager Ken Smith said.Gates will be removed from city garages and gates, utilizing cameras that read license plates as credentials for access. Park Omaha says they are similar to cameras used at car washes.Drivers will be able to pay through kiosks, or by phone through QR codes or Park Omaha app.Park Omaha says there are three rate zones in a new progressive rate structure. If a driver parks in a green “E” area, which means economy parking, the rate is $0.50 per hour. The rate will not increase and will have a max daily price of $6. Occasionally, economy parking may have higher hourly rates when large events are happening nearby, but the rate will remain flat. If a driver parks in a orange “3+” area, the parking rate will increase hourly, beginning after three hours, with a max daily price of $15.50. The base rate for this zone is $1 per hour for the first three hours.If a driver parks in a purple “2+” area, the parking rate will increase hourly, beginning after two hours, with a max daily price of $29.
