38-year-old woman accused of hitting, killing motorcyclist in Omaha was allegedly drunk at time of crash
The 38-year-old woman accused of hitting a killing a motorcyclist appeared in front of a judge Wednesday morning.
According to prosecutors, Lorena Lara-Diaz, from Marshall, Missouri, was allegedly drunk when she turned in front of 45-year-old Gary Mangiameli's motorcycle early Sunday morning near 26th and L streets.
Mangiameli died at the scene.
In Douglas County court, prosecutors said officers could smell alcohol on Lara-Diaz, but that she refused a field sobriety and breathalyzer test.
"Subsequent investigation showed the defendant had been drinking at a nightclub from 11:39 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.," said Alexander Kelly, the Douglas County deputy attorney. "Receipts in her name indicated five separate drink purchases, and the defendant is on video consuming alcohol."
Bond was set at $200,000 for Lara-Diaz, who is charged with manslaughter, and her preliminary hearing is set for May 2.
