SO WHAT SETS APART A REGULAR THUNDERSTORM FROM A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM? WELL, IT HAS TO FIT AT LEAST ONE OF THESE THREE CRITERIA, STARTING WITH WIND. WIND GUSTS OF AT LEAST 58 MILES PER HOUR HAVE TO BE REACHED AND WE’RE TALKING GUSTS NOT SUSTAINED WINDS. NEXT, WE HAVE THE POTENTIAL FOR HAIL OF AT LEAST A ONE INCH IN DIAMETER. AND THIS HAS TO BE SEEN. SO AT THE SIZE OF A QUARTER, FINALLY TO REACH THAT SEVERE THUNDERSTORM THRESHOLD, TORNADO PART OF THE OFFICIAL DEFINITION HAS TO BE SPOTTED OR PICKED UP HERE ON RADAR.
