Ferret dies in Omaha house fire, occupants displaced

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Smoke from an Omaha house fire could be seen lingering across I-80 Monday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to the area of 35th and Hascall around 2:30 p.m.

According to officials, the fire started in the basement of the home and flames were seen from all sides of the house as firefighters approached.

Crews managed to get the blaze under control in roughly 15 minutes.

Two people escaped from the home along with a dog, and another dog was rescued by firefighters. A ferret was found deceased in the home’s basement.

No injuries were reported, but three occupants are displaced as a result of the fire.

Omaha Fire officials say the home suffered heavy damages, with the structure sustaining $45,800 in damage.

Officials added the home also did not have any smoke detectors at the time of the fire. The Omaha Fire Department reminds residents that smoke detectors are available from them for free.
