Omaha man who killed father found not responsible of murder by reason of insanity
A Douglas County judge says an Omaha man who shot and killed his father is not responsible of the 2021 crime, by reason of insanity.
Judge Duane Dougherty issued the ruling Thursday, saying Julian Lopez, 24, is not responsible by reason of insanity and acquitted him of the second-degree murder and use of a deadly weapon charges he was facing.
Court records show a doctor diagnosed Lopez as schizophrenic.
In 2022, he was ruled not competent to stand trial. Court records show that decision was reversed Thursday.
According to an arrest affidavit, Lopez admitted to the shooting that killed his father Jose Valenzuela, 40.
Officers were called to an apartment building near 106th & Bedford Plaza in June of 2021 and found Valenzuela dead inside one of the units.
No motive was revealed.
