I-40 NEAR DOWNTOWN. WELL, BUDDING FLOWERS, RISING TEMPERATURES HAVE SPRING. IT’S A GREAT TIME TO TRY A NEW HOBBY. ONE OPTION, GARDENING. WE TOOK A TRIP TO INDIAN CREEK NURSERY TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU WANT TO PLANT A GARDEN. YOU CAN BE VERY SUCCESSFUL WHOLE WITHOUT KNOWING ANYTHING. SPRING IS THE TIME TO PLAN. IF YOU’RE LOOKING TO ONE DAY PLANT. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT THE GARDEN IS YOUR SOIL. SCOTT FARRINGTON HAS DECADES OF GARDENING EXPERIENCE AS OWNER OF INDIAN CREEK NURSERY. HE SAYS THE COMING WEEKS ARE THE PERFECT TIME TO GET STARTED. AS THINGS DRY, YOU DON’T WANT TO TURN OVER REALLY SOGGY SOIL, SO YOU WANT TO BE SOMEWHAT DRY AND CRUMBLY. SO USUALLY APRIL IS A GOOD TIME TO START FIRST. MAP OUT YOUR GARDEN SPACE. YOU WANT TO DIG AS DEEP AS YOU CAN AND TURN THE SOIL. THEN IT’S IMPORTANT TO ADD ORGANIC MATTER ONCE YOU’VE GOT YOUR COMPOST IN. CHOOSE BETWEEN STARTING WITH SEEDS OR PLANTS. PLANTS YOU’RE PROBABLY GUARANTEED A LITTLE MORE SUCCESS. SEEDS LESS EXPENSIVE. YOU CAN PLANT MORE. SPACE IS KEY IN YOUR GARDEN. TOMATO PLANTS TAKE UP A LOT OF SPACE. PEPPER PLANTS, NOT AS MUCH. RADISHES, LETTUCES AND SMALL CARROTS ARE GREAT OPTIONS FOR TIGHT SPACES. IF YOU’VE GOT ROOM TO PLAY, YOUR CORN AND TOMATOES ARE HERE TO STAY. VINING CROPS SQUASHES, THINGS LIKE THAT. SOMETIMES THEY SPREAD A LONG WAY AND SO THEY ALSO REQUIRE QUITE A BIT OF SPACE. DON’T WORRY IF YOU NEED A LITTLE TIME TO ORGANIZE YOUR GARDEN PLAN AND SOME PEOPLE WILL COME IN THE STORE, YOU KNOW, AND IT’S MAY 20TH. OH, I’M SO LATE. YOU’RE REALLY NOT THAT LATE. AS THE WEATHER IS WARM, THINGS DEVELOP SO MUCH FASTER. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, ENJOY EVERY STEP OF THE PROCESS. WE’RE IN THIS BUSINESS. WE LOVE TO GROW THINGS AND IT’S INSPIRING TO GROW THINGS. AND SO YOU PLANT SOME SEED, YOU SEE THEM GROW, YOU EAT THEM. AMAZING. I MEAN, IT’S JUST AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE. A COUPLE OF NOTES TO PASS ALONG. EVERY GARDEN, OF COURSE, NEEDS PLENTY OF SUNLIGHT. BUT SCOTT SAYS BEANS, LETTUCES, KALE’S THEY’RE FINE WITH SOME SHADE. HOWEVE
