Olivet College baseball player shot at Muskingum University

OLIVET, Mich. (WOOD) — The Olivet College baseball team returned to campus on Saturday after one of their own players was shot multiple times after a game in New Concord, Ohio.

The player is now out of the hospital and recovering.

It happened around 7 p.m. Friday on Muskingum University’s campus in New Concord, about 70 miles east of Columbus. Olivet had just defeated Muskingum 8-6.

According to Olivet College, after the game ended the player went back to the dugout at Mose Morehead Field to get his belongings when “an incident occurred involving an unknown individual with a firearm.”

Muskingum University officials then issued a shelter-in-place order for the campus before a suspect was taken into custody.

The player, who has not been named, was taken to a local hospital with injuries not considered to be life-threatening. He has since been released.

Police identified the suspect as Franklin Grayson, who graduated Olivet in 2021. Police said there’s no indication Grayson knew the player, and there’s no ongoing threat to him or the greater community.

The sheriff’s office has not yet released any possible charges against Grayson for the shooting.

Olivet College is about 20 miles northeast of Battle Creek. The team will not play its three remaining scheduled games in Ohio as it returned to campus on Saturday.

“The College is in communication with the student-athletes and their parents and will continue to provide support in the days ahead,” the school wrote in a statement. “This is a challenging time for all involved and our attention is focused on supporting the student-athletes and staff members. Please keep your fellow Comets in your thoughts and prayers.”
