Oklahoma DB Target Headlines Westmoore Team Camp

Late last week, the AllSooners crew was in Moore to check in on one of the Sooners' primary defensive targets in the 2024 class.

The Westmoore Jaguars hosted a padded team camp last week, featuring varsity and JV squads from Deer Creek, Edmond Santa Fe, Lawton MacArthur, Jenks, Norman North and Westmoore. Amongst the many talented OK Preps standouts, one prospect separated himself from the rest, 2024 Westmoore (OK) safety Mykel Patterson-McDonald

The 5-foot-11 defensive back flew all around the field, delivering jaw-dropping hits in run defense and locking down his half of the field in pass coverage. Patterson-McDonald even played wide receiver in scrimmages, illustrating that he was not afraid to get physical when blocking on the outside.

The Westmoore standout made multiple highlight plays against opposing teams, telling AllSooners afterwards that he enjoyed getting to compete against such stiff competition.

"It felt good to get another look, besides my teammate," Patterson-McDonald said following the second day of the Jaguars' team camp. "It was a lot of good work out there."

On one play against Lawton MacArthur, Patterson-McDonald lowered his shoulder into one of the Highlanders' running backs, sending the ball-carrier crashing into the turf with a loud thud. The crowd erupted in excitement as the two players briefly exchanged words before the Westmoore defense returned to the sideline.

Against Jenks, Patterson-McDonald dropped back into coverage before reading the quarterback's eyes and sprinting to the middle of the field, leaping into the air to grab an interception.

Later on in the day, Patterson-McDonald helped force a fumble against Edmond Santa Fe, capping off an impressive outing from the Sooners DB target. Even when he wasn't making highlight-reel plays, Patterson-McDonald did the little things correctly, relaying calls from the sideline to the Jaguars' defense and showing no fear when bringing down bigger ball-carriers like 2025 tight end Garrison Utley of Norman North.

Patterson-McDonald is currently a 4-star recruit, rated as the No. 3 player in Oklahoma according to Rivals. The Westmoore standout holds offers from Iowa State, Michigan State, Washington State, Houston and Missouri, among others.

He's also an OU legacy, as his father was on the football team for the Sooners when he was in college.

Patterson-McDonald has an official visit lined up to UNLV June 23-25, and has said that he plans to take a visit to Norman in the fall.

When asked about what matchup the talented safety was looking forward to during his senior season, he replied without hesitation.

"Union. That Union game, it's going to be a big game," Patterson-McDonald said. "It's a few kids I know there, like (fellow Sooners' DB target) Devon Jordan. It's going to be really good competition, top five kid in the state, top three. Good competition."

After the team camp, the Jaguars' safety told AllSooners that he and Jordan have discussed playing together in college.

If Brent Venables and company were able to land both of the talented defensive backs, it would be a huge boost to an already impressive 2024 DB group. When asked about his relationship with the Sooners staff, Patterson-McDonald said that he appreciates how transparent the OU coaches are to him.

"They're always honest with me, always straightforward with me. They check up on me, see how I'm doing. See if I want to come by," Patterson-McDonald said. "I just love the coaches there, love the program."

The Westmoore DB even said that he feels as though he fits in well with Oklahoma's scheme, telling AllSooners that the OU defense is similar to what the Jaguars run. While there is still a lot of time left in Patterson-McDonald's recruitment, it seems as though the Sooners are in a great position with the star defender.

Another player who stood out at Westmoore's team camp was 2024 Edmond Santa Fe (OK) DB Kyus Henry. Henry is a fiesty defensive back who does not shy away from contact and plays with good speed and physicality.

The Wolves' corner was wearing OU gloves at practice and told AllSooners that he has heard from the Oklahoma coaching staff. Henry added that he will be attending the Brent Venables Football Camp on June 13, where Sooners' cornerback coach Jay Valai will get to see firsthand what he brings to the table.
