On Saturday, Oklahoma Moms Demand Action and the Selfless Hands Foundation came together to clean up OKC, honoring the lives of those affected by gun violence.
"This weekend, we wear orange to bring awareness to gun violence, and orange is the color that we wear to honor survivors and those impacted by gun violence," said Louise Whitaker, Chapter Lead of Oklahoma Moms Demand Action.
According to statistics, Whitaker said, beautifying communities is crucial to help reduce gun violence.
"Where people take the time to beautify the community, it also lessens the incidents of gun violence. People take more pride in their community and are less likely to commit crimes," she said.
Emily graham said she decided to volunteer for moms demand action as well as the event because of the potential threat for school shootings while watching her son grow up.
"Sandy Hook happened when he was four, and that was frightening; really frightening before he even made it to school. And now he's just grown up with this being a thing that might happen to him; a school shooting.
While mass shootings and school shootings have prompted advocates to push harder for action, Whitaker said the cleanup Saturday also brings awareness to every day gun violence.
"It's those everyday incidents of domestic violence, road rage, someone pulling a gun, someone thinking that someone is breaking into their home and they're not and shooting them, those are the problems that need to be addressed," she said.
Whitaker did want to emphasize they are not an anti-gun group.
"We support the second amendment right to own guns, we just want to work to make gun safety a priority for every citizen of the United States," she said.
