“It was kind of chaotic. There were a lot of people running around telling us there were people trapped," said Battalion Chief Cathy Hayes, with the Oklahoma City Fire Department. "We did an extensive primary search where we go through, do a quick check, and then we did an extensive secondary search where it’s more methodical, slower and we could not find anybody."
Fire investigators were working to figure out how it started.
“There were people on scene that stated it was a kitchen fire. It doesn’t look like it was a kitchen fire. It looks like it started in the attic," Hayes said.
There were no injuries reported, but there was extensive damage.
“I think three families are going to be displaced. But it looks like most of the heavy damage is going to be in the attic. The common attic that runs that whole building," Hayes said.
Families embraced each other in tears after the fire was out. Those who don't have a place to stay will have some help.
“We have our community service liaisons here on scene working with them, and, like I said, they’re going to help them get put up for the night, either with American Red Cross or with somebody here in the apartment complex," Hayes said.
The fire department said there was damage to about 30% of the apartment complex.
