A metro family living with raccoons in the walls of their northwest Oklahoma City apartment will sleep better. The residents claimed they tried for days to get help from the apartment manager with no luck until this weekend.

Shortly after News 9 showed up at the Lakeside Village Apartments on Saturday, the property manager called the family to tell them help was on the way.

A baby raccoon was rescued from Michelle Caffey's apartment by a wildlife organization. The estimated eight-week-old baby likely fell from the attic and was trapped in the wall.

“Thursday, I realized there was a baby raccoon stuck in my closet, bedroom closet,” said Michelle Caffey, resident.

She recorded the wild animal's cries at night. Caffey even saw part of its face and claws. She was terrified it would claw its way through the wall. Caffey immediately contacted the apartment management and was told to call a pest control company.

“When I called them, they had to get permission from the apartment complex and he called,” said Caffey. “She denied them to remove the raccoons.”

Caffey said the apartment manager told her the price to remove the animals was too high. She called the manager again but this time a News 9 camera was rolling on the conversation.

“I thought they would have already taken steps to hand it,” said the apartment manager. Caffey pressed her on the issue of the animal being trapped inside the wall and said the issue should have been resolved days ago.

“OK, give me 10 minutes. I’ve got a call out, I’m calling a few more people,” said the apartment manager.

The Caffey family is thankful help came through, but said there was still a mother raccoon and more babies in the attic.

“We should be paying for a little bit better,” said Christy Caffey, resident. “At least to be able to sleep peacefully at night without having to worry about raccoons coming through the wall.”

The apartment manager emailed the News 9 newsroom and said a miscommunication caused the delay in removing the animal.
