As Oklahoma's regular legislative session concludes and Pride Month approaches, it's important that our residents know this: Oklahoma City remains an inclusive, welcoming, loving community that prioritizes personal freedom.

American personal freedom is unique - both globally and historically - and it was hard-fought. And though we often say we value it, it remains under attack because there is something in the human condition that desires to control the way that other people live. But in OKC we understand that freedom isn't freedom if it only means we all live exactly the same. If you truly believe in freedom, you must be the first to defend it for your neighbor who may live differently than you. We understand what freedom really means in Oklahoma City.

In Oklahoma City, we also stand for inclusion and love. A few years ago I began using a simple phrase - "All people are welcome in Oklahoma City." This simple phrase has never failed me.

In Oklahoma City, we can't control the rhetoric or actions of those who come from far away places or pass laws at other levels of government. But we can set our own tone and aspirations. People who don't even live in OKC do not speak for us. They never have and they never will. We are America's 20th-largest city and we speak for ourselves.
