Metro Company Working To Change How Surgeries Are Performed

New medical innovations are being developed in the OKC metro area.

A brand new augmented reality company called Xironetic is hoping its technology will transform the way surgeries are performed.

Christian El Amm with Xironetic has extensive experience as a surgeon and is a Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Oklahoma. 

Dr. El Amm specializes in plastic and reconstructive surgery, and pediatric plastic and craniofacial surgery. 

El Amm believes this software is a major breakthrough in the medical realm.

"We have noticed that our surgeons feel better, our patients feel better and it is safer" said Dr. El Amm.

Thanks to an Innovation District networking event in 2018, Dr. El Amm recognized AR technology could be useful in surgeries leading to the creation of Xironetic.

"The surgeon would just wear it, put it on their head and operate the technology. It is operated by voice commands and it is activated using hand technology... He said "You can almost see through the patient as you are operating on the patient."

It's been used in more than 100 surgeries and last year the device was cleared by the FDA.

Jeff Potts the VP of engineering said the Oklahoma based startup is going national.

Potts said "So now we are aggressively trying to commercialize the technology at hospitals across the country and they are really starting to pilot the technology and to validate what this technology brings."

For doctor El Amm who primarily works on children, he believes this technology is life changing.

“This technology is making a difference today and it will hopefully make a difference throughout the country very soon."
