The bar's security guard died this week from a gunshot injury, and the suspect is on the run.

The 42-year-old victim was well known and loved by his family and the many friends Gary Middaugh made while working security at The Tree Lounge.

The bar near Northeast 36th and Lincoln is quiet during the day, but at night and on the weekends turns into a hotspot of activity.

Regular customers said they were often greeted at the door by Middaugh.

One man told News 9 he was shocked to hear the towering security guard did not survive a recent shooting.

Middaugh died Monday while in the ICU at OU Medical Center. Police said the security guard was sent to the hospital on March 18.

“It was learned that inside the club there was a subject causing a disturbance,” Captain Valerie Littlejohn, Oklahoma City Police Department, said. “So, a security guard escorted that subject out of the club.”

Police said the suspect pulled a gun on Middaugh and shot the security guard in the chest. Middaugh was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and the suspect fled the scene.

“Unfortunately, the victim did pass away from his injuries on March 27th,” Littlejohn said.

Investigators said there were plenty of witnesses and camera footage to help identify the shooter.

“Investigators are doing everything they can to get as much evidence to try to solve this case,” Littlejohn said.

Police have not made an arrest in the case but have leads on who they are looking for. Investigators ask the public to call the Homicide Tip Line at 405-297-1200 with information that can help the case.
