Man Taken Into Custody After Escaping Bill Johnson Correctional Center Last Week

The inmate who escaped out of the Bill Johnson Correctional Center last week has been taken into custody in Oklahoma City.

U.S. Marshals arrested Joey Mena Friday morning at a home near Southeast 44th Street and South Sunnylane Road after he escaped on March 18.

The woman who police believed to be with Mena, Michelle Kjelgaard, and the homeowner of the property were both arrested on the complaint of harboring a fugitive.

The arrests come days after search efforts for both Mena and Kjelgaard.

The United State Marshal for the Western District of Oklahoma Johnny Kuhlman released the following statement:

“U.S. Marshals task forces combine the efforts of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to locate and arrest the most dangerous fugitives in our communities. The Oklahoma Department of Corrections is a long-standing partner of this task force, and we are grateful for their support.”
