Oklahoma City police arrested Rep. Dean Davis, R-Broken Arrow, for public intoxication early Thursday morning.
According to a police report, the arrest happened at Skinny Slims at 201 E. Main Street in Oklahoma City shortly after 2 a.m. Officers on the way back to the station noticed people drinking on the patio at Skinny Slims.
Police said Davis was "argumentative" when confronted by officers and had "red watery eyes and slurred speech."
Police said Davis tried to show officers a credential and made a statement to the effect of, "You don't know how bad you messed up. You will find out tomorrow."
Police also said Skinny Slims was in violation for allowing people to drink on the patio after 2 a.m.
This is not Davis' first run-in with the law, having been arrested back in 2019 for driving under the influence. Davis was sentenced in 2022 to a six-month deferred sentence, which he completed on March 3, 2023.
According to court documents, Davis pleaded nolo contendere to the offense.
WATCH REP. DAVIS' APOLOGY BELOW:
Davis disputed that any wrongdoing occurred Thursday.
"I understand that last night has become a story, and that many of my colleagues in the House are now being asked to comment on or to explain the events of last night," Davis said "I dispute any wrongdoing, however, I do want to take this opportunity to apologize to this body for creating this unnecessary distraction from the important work of the House."
Davis was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center following Thursday's incident but has since been released on OR City Bond.
Oklahoma Democrats are calling for Republican lawmakers to be held accountable.
Two other House Republicans have also gotten in trouble with the law: Ryan Martinez and Terry O'Donnell.
They haven't faced any political consequences so far, but all helped vote to censure Democrat Mauree Turner two weeks ago. Turner was accused of "impeding a law enforcement investigation."
"They've got folks with felony-level indictments," Turner said. "That man passed a 'Don't Say Gay' bill on the House floor. They let him chair every time he has the opportunity to. I'm always a little shocked at the depths that they will go, but I'm never surprised."
House Minority Leader Cyndi Munson says she wants Davis to own up to what he's being accused of.
"Oklahomans deserve an apology and an explanation," Munson said. "These are taxpayer dollars that are being used when he's at work with what happened earlier this morning."
She wants to see her fellow lawmakers take action.
"I think he should be held equally accountable. Otherwise what the Republicans are showing us is that they are okay with being unfair in how we treat our members when they break our House rules. There is unfair treatment of our members in the House."
Both Munson and Turner tell me they wish Davis well, and they hope he gets the help he needs.
