TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Ohio Foodbanks were set to see their funding increase in the state’s budget but that’s no longer the case.

They say additional money is crucial as demand for their services increases. The Ohio Association of Foodbanks says across the state, organizations served 32% more people in the first quarter of this year compared to the same quarter in 2022.

They were able to secure an additional $15 million in funding in the House’s budget but the Senate cut those increases. Foodbanks are fighting to get that funding put back in the budget.

They say organizations across the state are seeing elevated need due to inflation, supply chain issues and the expiration of pandemic-era snap benefits. A recent survey of Ohio Foodbanks found 8-in-10 are seeking help with emergency food because of higher food costs.

“Food banks have been a bucket brigade on a 5-alarm fire trying to meet increased demand,” said Lisa Hamler-Fugitt, the Executive Director from the Ohio Association of Foodbanks. “It’s deeply troubling that we’re seeing more Ohioans who are struggling.”

The Senate could pass its budget next week then leaders will work with house leadership to reach a compromise. They have a deadline of June 30th to settle their differences.
