OGDEN, Utah — In an exchange of gunfire, a man was shot and killed Tuesday while a police officer was shot and hospitalized in stable condition.

The person who was suspected of shooting the officer was shot and killed by police officers after they responded to a call at apartments near a technical college, according to Ogden Police Department Deputy Chief Jake Sube.

He said the call of a protective order violation came at 170 N., Washington Boulevard in Ogden. Police confronted a man with a gun and there was a gunfire exchange. Additional officers responded and multiple rounds were fired, when one officer was hit by gunfire.

“I am relieved to let you know the officer is in stable condition but continues to receive treatment,” Sube said.

“The suspect was shot at the scene and succumbed to injuries at the scene,” Sube said. “It is important to know this situation was chaotic and rapidly evolving.”

Another police agency will investigate the shooting and Sube said Ogden Police Department would be transparent in the investigation of the events Tuesday. He said officers responded bravely and decisively. Sube did not take media questions and said updates would be provided later, citing the ongoing investigation before ended his prepared statement.

As is standard procedure in a police shootings, officers involved will be placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

In a video taken by a person in the area, a hail of gunfire can be heard while distant police activity can be seen.

There was a large police response in the area of Washington Boulevard and 2nd Street in the area of Ogden-Weber Technical College. College President Jim Taggart confirmed that police ordered people there to shelter in place at approximately 3:40 p.m. and lifted that order at 4:30 p.m.

The shooting was near but not on campus, Taggart said. It is believed no students were involved. The police activity was centered around an apartment complex adjacent to the college but school was not in session as the time of the incident.

“When Ogden police arrived on our campus, they coordinated with college security and asked that we issue a shelter-in-place, which is to protect those that are on campus. We sent out an automated message informing individuals to stay in our buildings and to avoid the entrance to the campus while the police secured the site after whatever incident was taking place,” Taggart said.

“Then they notified us that we could release the shelter-in-place and reopen the campus.”

Evening classes were planned to continue as scheduled but students were asked to use the Monroe Boulevard or North Street entrances and not the one on Washington Boulevard.
