OPD releases new information on deadly crash at 42nd, Governor Preston Smith

One person was pronounced dead at Medical Center Hospital.

ODESSA, Texas —

The Odessa Police Department has released the names of the drivers in a deadly crash on Tuesday night.

According to OPD, at approximately 7:45 p.m., Odessa police and Odessa Fire Rescue responded to a call for a major wreck at 42nd Street and Governor Preston Smith Road.

An investigation revealed that a 2020 Nissan Altima, driven by Griselda Cardenas, was stopped in the left turn lane of the 5000 Block E 42nd St.

Several motorcycles, including a Kawasaki Ninja, ridden by Severo Muniz, a 2023 Kawasaki Ninja ridden by Brandon Rosenthal and a 2017 Honda CB1000 ridden by Mario Olivas, were all traveling the opposite direction of the Altima in the 5000 Block of E 42nd.

Cardenas failed to yield the right of way, turning left onto Governor Preston Smith Road. This caused Muniz and Rosenthal’s motorcycles to hit the car and Olivas’ motorcycle to be laid down.

Muniz was taken to Medical Center Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Rosenthal was taken to MCH with serious bodily injuries and Olivas was treated and released at the scene of the crash.

The Investigation is ongoing. We will update this story if more details are released.
