Overland Park ice cream shop that hires workers with disabilities is hitting the road

The Golden Scoop will permanently close the doors of its flagship store at 95th and Nall Ave., in Overland Park, Kansas, on Saturday, Oct. 31. The ice cream shop opened in 2021 as a place to hire and empower people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Overwhelming support for the store led to them opening a second Overland Park location, which will remain open.

It might be becoming a thing. The guy who took over the former Sun Fresh in the Linwood Shopping Center to save a grocery store for East Side Kansas City residents in the Prospect corridor might have a knack for turning around urban markets. We’ll see, because that guy, Anthony Estrada , just took on a new challenge: managing another grocery store in what used to be The Merc Co+op, a community-owned market in Kansas City, Kansas. It’s a project Estrada said he’s been working toward for more than a year. And now it looks like he may be only two or three months away from opening what will be his second urban grocery store. It will be a United Market, just like the store he opened in May at 31st Street and Prospect Avenue in Kansas City. The Kansas store will have the same logo as the Linwood Shopping Center store — hands cupping a piece of fruit — and share the same color scheme, so he is going for a recognizable look. Potential sales tax initiative could help improve downtown Merriam

MERRIAM, Kan. – At a meeting Monday, Merriam city leaders discussed potential sales tax initiatives that could help fund its Downtown Master Plan Project. "The main thing is to try to get it out of the floodplain or get as much of the downtown out of the floodplain. So that it can be redeveloped," said Merriam's Mayor Bob Pape. "Currently, with the federal statutes, you cannot develop in a floodplain. So in order to make any drastic changes, we've got to elevate the ground level in order to build new buildings potentially down there."
