OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — Crews responded to a large structure fire on Sunday evening in Oak Island.

Oak Island Fire Department responded with assistance from Southport, Sunny Point,  St. James,  Boiling Springs Lakes, Winnabow, Supply, and Brunswick County EMS to NE 41st Street at 9:13pm.

Crews arrived just six minutes after the call was made to find the home completely engulfed in flames.

A spokesman for the Town of Oak Island says the home on the 300 block of NE 41st Street is a total loss. The homes adjacent to the destroyed house sustained structural damage.

The fire took about 45 minutes to contain.

The owners were not home when the fire started, but they did return home to find the situation unfolding.

No humans were injured in the fire, but the four dogs the family owned were found deceased.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, although officials say the fire seems to have started on the ground floor.

Officials say that it will take some time to determine the actual cause of the fire due to the severity of the damage.
