Firefighter's firstborn saved by organ donation; family becomes donorship advocates
Josh Bauer wasn't expecting the call so soon. Just a few months on the waitlist for a kidney was all it took for his son, Coyle Bauer, who wasn't even a year old at the time. Most people awaiting an organ match aren't as lucky, which is why the Bauer family have become advocates for people to register as organ donors. "It does not hurt to check that box to...
'Attendance matters' conveyed at Northfield School Board meeting
At last week's Northfield School Board meeting, Hope Langston, director of institutional services, told board members that the Minnesota Department of Education's new goal was to have a 95% attendance rate. Langston said that while consistent attendance has long been a statewide priority, recent data shows that is students miss more than 17 days of a 172-day school year there are usually consequences. "Here in Northfield, we have 93% attendance...
Letter to the Editor: The questionable value of Flex Dollars
For many Oles, discussing Bon Appétit and its role in our community is nothing new. In the last several years at St. Olaf, Bon Appétit has had its fair share of hardships, harsh criticism, and detractors — of which I admit, I am one. However, Bon Appétit does a hard and often thankless job within our community — keeping us all fed. Therefore, this piece is intended to promote a larger conversation about Bon Appétit in our community, how we feed people, and the policies St. Olaf puts in place to this end.
Teenage Faribault entrepreneur wants to make more floors shine
At his after-school job at a Faribault hardware store, 17-year-old Felix Hanke’s duties include scrubbing the floors. But the scrubber machine he has to use at the Fleet Supply is clunky and often needs maintenance, he said. The Faribault teen has now launched his own business selling scrubbers that he says are smaller, more affordable and easier to maintain. ...
Letter to the Editor: What happened to celebration?
What happened to the Hundred Days March? I don’t recall having seen one since 2019, other than the football team taking a little victory parade. I am a St. Olaf Ave. homeowner, long-time Northfield resident, and lover of tradition and celebration. I like hearing the students out having fun and being young. It’s a hopeful sound that — in the past — generally consisted of running groups, singing, random conversations about elegant equations, navigating young love, talking to a parent on the phone, and laughter. I was perfectly aware of what I could be getting myself into buying a home three blocks from a college, and I’m afraid you have not been holding up your end of the bargain.
CAC and Rebound team on effort to add new workforce housing units in Northfield
Amid a dearth of affordable housing, the Northfield City Council is backing an effort by the Community Action Center and Rebound Partners to bring eight multi-family workforce housing units to town with the help of state funding. At its Tuesday night meeting, the council unanimously approved a proposal to request $800,000 in assistance from the Workforce Housing Development Program, a program designed to help small to midsize communities in Greater Minnesota meet their rental workforce housing needs. ...
Free class offers advice, community to new mothers
Sharing advice between sleepless nights makes motherhood a little easier for a group of Faribault mothers. At 10:30 a.m. every Thursday, several mothers and their newborns up to 12 weeks old gather at the Faribault Education Center for a free class called Baby Stop, where they offer and receive advice from a nurse, an educator and each other. Faribault Public Schools Early Childhood Family Education Parent Educator Anna Runestad leads...
Faribault mayor: 'We need to push harder' for northern I-35 interchange
Planning for a freeway interchange just north of the city of Faribault is inching forward, despite uncertainty over if or when state and federal approval and funding will be awarded. “Policies in place at the state and federal highway administration — they only approve new interchanges for safety and capacity reasons. We have neither,” City Engineer Mark DuChene told city councilors during an update Tuesday evening. Last month the Rice...

An ex-employee is accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of vehicles, tools and more from a Faribault truck company. Most of the stolen items have been recovered. Barney Leng, 35, of Faribault, was charged with felony counts of burglary, theft and receiving stolen property last week in Rice County District Court. He was released Friday without having to pay any bail. Employees arrived at the Allstate Peterbilt...
