NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio –

Robbery: Great Northern Mall

Officers at 3:41 p.m. on March 1 responded to Macy’s after a department store security officer said they were attempting to detain an “aggressive” shoplifter.

A female loss prevention officer and a male store associate were breathing heavily and appeared distraught, according to a police report. They had been in a physical struggle with a man accused of picking up two Dior bottle gift sets that were displayed on a counter and concealing them in a shopping bag.

The suspect attempted to leave the store with the concealed merchandise, according to a police report. The female security officer approached the man after he left all points of sale, but he denied having any store merchandise and physically resisted being detained. During a struggle in which the suspect pulled away from the loss prevention officer and struck her with an open hand to the chest, the male sales associate assisted the loss prevention officer, and a third store employee called 911.

The two Dior gift sets were valued at $330. The suspect was being charged with felony robbery, according to the police report.

Physical control: Decker Road

An officer at 5:06 p.m. on Feb. 27 found an occupied SUV stopped on Decker Road in the northbound traffic lane but headed southbound.

A woman was slumped over the wheel. She appeared to be asleep, but she awoke as an officer opened the driver’s side door. An officer noticed a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from inside the vehicle, according to a police report.

The officer told the woman to shut off the vehicle, but she had trouble complying, and the officer reached in to shut off the vehicle. The woman confirmed she had been drinking, but the officer couldn’t understand what she was saying after he asked her where she had been drinking. The woman slurred her words, according to the police report.

Officers found two empty wine bottles and a cup filled with an alcoholic beverage inside the vehicle.

The driver refused to perform field sobriety tests or to submit to a chemical test. She was charged with physical control and refusing a chemical test.

Shoplifting: Great Northern Mall

Officers at 7:46 p.m. on Feb. 27 responded to Dillard’s department store after a security officer said security employees witnessed the suspect conceal a $125 Polo shirt and attempt to leave the store without paying.

The suspect was seen on camera concealing the shirt in a brown paper bag and then walking past two cashiers and toward the store exit. The man objected to his arrest, saying that he had not left the store with the merchandise. However, the suspect refused to provide a statement.

The man was charged with shoplifting and possession of criminal tools, both of which are misdemeanors.
