Local leaders to honor blood bank pioneer with weekend drive

Local leaders will be honoring a healthcare pioneer over the weekend.

His name is Dr. Charles Drew and he was a prominent African American physician and blood bank pioneer.
Drew was also the medical director of the first Red Cross blood bank in 1941.
His research on blood plasma storage and shipment proved that blood could be stored for transfusions, with many of the processes he developed still being used to this day.

The blood drive event honoring his legacy will be this Saturday, June 10 from 9 am to 2 pm at the Pearson Community Center in North Las Vegas.
