Oklahoma become the second three-peat national champion in NCAA Division I softball history Thursday night when it completed a sweep of Florida State in the 2023 Women's College World Series finals.

With their 3-1 victory in Game 2 of the best-of-three series, Patty Gasso's Sooners joined the 1988-90 UCLA squad that won three in a row under Sharron Backus. This is Gasso's seventh national title in her 29-year tenure.

OU didn't break a sweat even after Mack Leonard's fourth-inning home run put the Seminoles on the board first. Cydney Sanders and Grace Lyon responded with back-to-back homers in the top of the fifth. Oklahoma added an insurance run in the sixth, and then Jordy Bahl — who threw a two-hit shutout in Game 1 — finished out the series in the circle, striking out two Seminoles in the bottom of the seventh.

That brought on a loud, tearful celebration at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. The Sooners ended the season with a 61-1 record and extended their winning streak to 53 games. Florida State was runner-up to Oklahoma again, same as they were in the 2021 finals.

Five Sooners were named to the All-Tournament team: Bahl, who was also named Most Outstanding Player; Rylie Boone; Jayda Coleman; Kinzie Hansen and Tiare Jennings.

Seminoles players Michaela Edenfield, Kaley Mudge and Kathryn Sandercock joined them on the team.
