Richmond County deputies charge man in assault, robbery

NORMAN — An Ellerbe man is facing charges in an assault earlier this month.

On Friday, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 25-year-old Rasaahn David Watkins for an alleged assault that took place March 1 in Norman.
(Note: The press release lists Watkins’ middle name as “Davis.”)

According to the sheriff’s office, the victim required “extended hospital treatment” for the injuries sustained.

Watkins was arrested March 16, charged with assault inflicting serious bodily injury and common law robbery, and booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $25,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in court March 30.

(Note: The press release does not mention the robbery charge.)

Online court records show Watkins has pending traffic citations in Montgomery and Stanly counties from 2022, including fleeing to elude arrest and reckless driving to endanger in Stanly County.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety show Watkins has several prior convictions in Forsyth County.

In 2016, Watkins was convicted of driving while impaired and served nearly three weeks behind bars.

Two weeks after being released, he was convicted on two counts each of possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance (marijuana) and resisting a public officer and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

In January 2017, Watkins was convicted of criminal contempt and incarcerated for nearly two weeks.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
