HAMPTON ROADS, Va. — On Wednesday, June 7, the Norfolk Police Department, the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office, the Virginia Beach Police Department and other Hampton Roads-based agencies teamed up to run for a special cause: the Special Olympics.

The runners participated in the annual Torch Run in support for the Special Olympics. According to Special Olympics Virginia, law enforcement agencies and corrections departments in the Commonwealth come together to participate in the run and raise money. Each year, the Torch Run raises over a million dollars for the Special Olympics, according to the organization.

During the run, hundreds of law enforcement members help carry the “Flame of Hope” throughout the state. Collectively, 1,900 miles of ground are covered in eight days.

The run’s end signifies the start of Special Olympics Virginia’s Summer Games in Richmond. This year, the Summer Games are happening June 9 – 10.
