A s millions of Americans witnessed, Donald Trump had a rough go of it during his presidential debate against Vice President Kamala Harris Tuesday night. Trump’s performance against Harris was so abysmal that even Fox News pundits watched it like: “Bro, WTF was that?” So, since nobody on the right is delusional enough to deny that the debate didn’t go well for Trump — well, except for Trump , of course — pundits and GOP members pivoted to one of their favorite go-to deflective talking points: They whined about media bias because Trump got fact-checked in real-time.
Suddenly all of the “facts over feelings” are complaining, “What’s up with all of these facts ? I have feelings about it!”
I Mean, They Had To Tell Trump That Murder Is Actually Illegal
That’s right, folks. Despite the fact that the moderators at ABC News afforded Trump more speaking time than they did Harris throughout the debate (which, to be fair, is exactly what Harris’ campaign wanted ), every disposable right-wing bobblehead from Charlie Kirk to Ben Shapiro to Megyn Kelly is claiming ABC moderators rigged the debate in favor of Harris just because Trump was called out on his lies multiple times, although, honestly, it mostly happened when his lies got so ridiculous somebody had to say something.
If the moderators at ABC were really dedicated to checking Trump on every lie he told on that debate stage, they would be entitled to compensation because there has to be some kind of media union that protects reporters from being overworked like that. But when Trump is out here saying wild nonsense like, “You could do abortions in the seventh month, the eighth month, the ninth month, and probably after birth,” a responsible journalist has to note that there’s a law in every state that disallows the killing of babies after they’re born — it’s called murder.
After Trump’s running mate J.D. Vance started spreading the lie that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were abducting and eating people’s pets — a ridiculous claim that started as a right-wing internet rumor — outlets across media almost immediately joined the Springfield Police Department in thoroughly debunking the racist, xenophobic nonsense. However, Trump didn’t get the memo, because he stood there Tuesday night with a straight face and said, “They’re eating the dogs, the people that came in, they’re eating the cats, they’re eating the pets of the people that live there.” Of course moderator David Muir had to push back on that. Was he just supposed to accept, “but…but…I saw it on TV” as Trump’s credible source of information?
The Bottom Line
At the end of the day, the debate went as many people predicted, which is to say, Harris didn’t need the help of “biased” ABC moderators because all she had to do was let Trump talk and hang himself. After all, no ABC moderator put a gun to Trump’s head and made him say that Harris “wants to do transgender operations on illegal aliens that are in prison” — he did that all on his own.
Harris won the debate because she was ready for Trump and because Trump is a demonstrable idiot. It’s that simple. For Trump, that debate was a self-inflicted dumpster fire, and all ABC did was point a camera at it.
