Thirteen municipalities, including Hubbard, put data center bans on their ballots.Sean O’Leary, senior researcher and author at the Ohio River Valley Institute, says the results send a clear message to the tech industry that opposition is moving beyond public protests and into local policy.“It definitely sent a message because we’re now moving beyond the world of simple protest into actions that have material effects in law,” O’Leary said.O’Leary says some companies could respond by moving their projects to other states. He pointed to West Virginia, which has been actively courting data center developers. While data centers can generate tax revenue for the communities that host them, O’Leary says the financial benefits do not always outweigh the costs residents may face.He points to rising utility bills and increased competition for skilled labor as two potential effects of the industry’s rapid growth.“Because data centers, or at least the hyper-scalers who represent the money behind data centers, have so much money, they are bidding up the prices of energy, of labor, and of other commodities throughout the economy, and we’re all feeling that in our pocketbooks,” O’Leary said.</div></body>
