Bowman collected 53% of the vote. Taft Coghill Jr. has the story.

-On the other hand, one of the biggest stories last week had nothing to do with the election. Marci Catlett, the first Black superintendent in the history of Fredericksburg’s schools, announced that she will retire effective June 30. Catlett has served in the role since 2019, and she began her career in the city as a sixth-grade teacher in the 1980s, Adele Uphaus reports.

-The Spotsylvania Planning Commission on Wednesday voted 3-2 to recommend the county Board of Supervisors approve the Regency Commons project, which includes a Sheetz and other commercial space in addition to 40 townhomes. The decision came despite several residents voicing concerns, Coghill writes.

-Stafford County voters on Tuesday narrowly rejected a ballot measure to implement an additional 1% sales tax to support school construction. About 50.5% of voters rejected the measure, and 49.5% approved it. Uphaus has the details.

-Washingtonian magazine recently published a story about the sixth-worst-ranked McDonald’s in America being in Stafford County. We decided to check it out for ourselves.

Go figures (numbers in the news)

$172.1 million — A 934,523-square-foot warehouse in Stafford County recently sold for this price. The property is leased to J.E. Richards, a power systems contractor serving the data center industry. Bill Freehling has more on this and other business news in Biz Beat Roundup.

What they’re saying

“I said, ‘Did you guys know we were the cradle of American horse racing?’” — India Adams-Jacobs, former Bowling Green town manager. And if you didn’t know about the municipality’s equine history, you need to read Taft Coghill Jr.’s story in Free Time, our arts and entertainment newsletter.
