From the tree-lined areas surrounding the courthouse to the storefronts and sidewalks of downtown, the vibrant fall colors are creating a postcard-perfect setting that signals the arrival of another holiday season in the Heart of Tennessee. The stunning autumn display also serves as a reminder that some of Murfreesboro's most cherished Christmas traditions are just weeks away. Main Street Murfreesboro, the nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, enhancing, and promoting downtown, is once again preparing for a season filled with community celebrations, local shopping, and hometown memories. The holiday festivities begin at 6:00PM Friday night, Dec. 4, 2026, with the annual Rutherford County Christmas Tree Lighting presented by Middle Tennessee Electric. Families will gather near the Rutherford County Courthouse for an evening of crafts, carriage rides, hot chocolate, games, choir performances, holiday shopping, and visits with Santa Claus. The highlight of the evening comes when Santa helps illuminate the community Christmas tree, officially ushering in the season. At nearly the same time, another longstanding local tradition returns as Oaklands Mansion hosts its Annual Christmas Dinner before welcoming visitors to the 43rd Annual Christmas Candlelight Tour of Homes on Dec. 12. The self-guided tour will feature historic homes, churches, local businesses, and community landmarks, offering residents an opportunity to experience Murfreesboro's rich history during the holiday season. The festivities continue at 2:00PM Sunday, Dec. 13, when thousands are expected to line East Main Street for the Murfreesboro Christmas Parade. This year's theme, "A Country Christmas," continues a tradition that has brought families together for decades. The parade route itself reflects Murfreesboro's history, beginning near MTSU and traveling west toward the historic downtown district. Many longtime residents remember the years when the Chamber of Commerce and various community organizations coordinated the parade. For four decades, WGNS coordinated the tradition before Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation assumed responsibility and continues event for future generations. While today's celebrations focus on Christmas lights, decorations, and community gatherings, the story of Murfreesboro's historic district began more than two centuries ago. As America marks its 250th anniversary, it is fitting to remember Revolutionary War veteran Captain William Lytle, whose vision helped shape this city. After receiving land for his military service, Lytle set aside parcels for government, commerce, and worship, including sites for a courthouse, businesses, and the community's first church. Sadly, that historic First Presbyterian Church was dismembered by Union troups during the Civil War. More than 200 years later, residents still gather in the very district that grew from that vision. Known as the "Heart of Tennessee" because of its location near the state's geographic center, Murfreesboro continues to blend history, community pride, local commerce, and holiday traditions in a way few places can.As the colorful leaves of fall eventually give way to Christmas lights and decorations, Murfreesboro's historic district once again stands ready to welcome the season and the families who make these traditions endure.</div></body>
