The Cloud Has a Texas Address

22 hours agoEvery digital image leaves a little heat behind. A photograph opens on a phone; a video begins before we think to ask where it came from; a painting photographed in Houston appears seconds later on a screen in Seoul. Digital culture encourages the fantasy of effortless passage, and its vocabulary does much of the work. We call it the cloud. We stream. We connect wirelessly. We enter virtual space. The language floats somewhere above geography, weightless and faintly meteorological, even while the machinery supporting it presses firmly into the ground.
