Another road trip awaits, this time to El Paso, Texas. Here are a few things to watch for as Hawaii takes on the El Paso Miners tomorrow, Saturday November 7th at 4:30 p.m. HT on FS1. Hawaii is a 9.5-point favorite.Hawaii traveled to DeKalb seemingly out of answers, a narrow favorite against a winless Huskies team. What transpired in the Northern Illinois contest was a three-hour shock as quarterback Micah Alejado threw for 323 yards and three touchdowns, while running back DeVon Rice scored three touchdowns as well in a 56-21 rout. Completely out-of-the-blue, Hawaii posted its highest point total of the Chang era. Is this a turning point, or a one week fluke? Another road test against a struggling foe awaits.UTEP’s offensive woes continueAnother week, another Mountain West newbie. UTEP has lost six straight contests and hasn’t scored more than 17 points in any of those games. The offensive struggle is real, the Miners best playmaker seems to be the backup/running quarterback, Raymond Moore III who averages 6.9 yards per carry. UTEP ranks 138th-nationally in scoring offense. There are only 138 FBS schools. Very, very bad. Hawaii defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman will be mad if Hawaii’s defense is the one that breaks this streak of poor Miner offensive play. This week presents a trip down memory lane for Hawaii fans. Hawaii and UTEP used to play against each other frequently back in the old WAC, both in the 90s and 00s. Hawaii leads the series 18-13, but the Miners won the most recent contest in 2004, a 51-20 beatdown. The quarterback for Hawaii that day? Now Hawaii head coach Timmy Chang. Hawaii will travel 3,000+ miles again, this time at elevation. On paper, Hawaii is just better, but the Rainbow Warriors know better than to overlook opposition. The Sun Bowl hasn’t been kind to UH football. As I noted earlier, UTEP’s best mode of transportation on offense this season has been…the backup quarterback? Quarterback EJ Colson isn’t terrible by any means, but the Miners have struggled to pass and run consistently. Moore, however, averages 6.9 ypc. Hawaii’s linebackers will need to contain the elusive scrambler.UTEP frankly doesn’t have a lot of standout performers on defense, but Miles has registered 3.5 sacks on the season and is the best pass rusher the Miners have. Hawaii kept Micah Alejado clean in the pocket for once, and what do you know! He thrived! Hawaii’s tackles will want to continue that development. The defense puts together its best performance of the season, holding UTEP to single-digit points at the Sun Bowl. The Rainbow Warrior defense recovers two fumbles.</div></body>
