Sixty-seven of the state’s districts and schools participated in the program’s first season, representing 874 school cafeterias serving 538,066 K-12 students.The program supports South Carolina farmers, provides opportunities for students to learn about nutrition and agriculture, and puts more fresh, healthy food on children’s plates.The awards were announced during the annual meeting of the School Nutrition Association of South Carolina.These awards recognize the districts that have made a strong commitment to buying local and supporting South Carolina farmers. Based on purchasing data, the top 15 districts were selected for their efforts to bring more South Carolina-grown products into their school cafeterias. The top five districts were awarded $10,000 each, and the next 10 districts were awarded $5,000 each.
