When the concept was shared with alumni, the enthusiastic response helped push the effort forward.“We are so excited to launch this new background plate,” said Tanisha Baker, Director of Alumni Affairs. “It allows our alumni and members of the Delaware State University community to display their Hornet pride while also supporting student needs beyond scholarships.”That groundswell of support led to Senate Bill 305, which creates a special Delaware State University registration plate. Sen. Trey Paradee sponsored the bill in the Senate, while Rep. Bill Bush carried it in the House. The legislation passed both chambers of the 153rd General Assembly, and Governor Matt Meyer signed it into law in September 2026.“Delaware State University is an important part of the fabric of our state, and I was proud to sponsor legislation that gives its alumni and supporters another way to celebrate that legacy,” said Sen. Paradee. “The tremendous response to this initiative speaks to the pride people have in Delaware State and the impact the University continues to have throughout Delaware.”“This license plate is another reflection of the extraordinary pride and commitment of the Delaware State University family,” said Delaware State University President Tony Allen. “Our alumni carry this University with them wherever they go, and now they will have another opportunity to proudly represent Delaware State while directly supporting the needs of our students.”The plate displays the Delaware State Hornets mascot against a blue background, with “Delaware State University” printed across the top. Under the new law, buyers pay a one-time fee of $65 on top of the standard annual registration fee. Of that amount, $15 goes toward administration costs, while the remaining $50 from each sale is directed to the Delaware State University Fund to support student access, academic excellence, and University programs. The plate is available for private passenger vehicles and for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,000 pounds or less.Delaware residents can order the plate online at dmv.de.gov/public.ejs?command=SpecialPlate, or apply by mail or in person at any local DMV location using the application found on the DMV website.</div></body>
