Voters submitted ballots for one United States senator, the state’s lone U.S. House member, several statewide executive offices and seats in the General Assembly. 47.49% of registered voters cast ballots, according to the Delaware Department of Elections.Midterm elections are often seen as a referendum on the sitting president’s party. Nationally, the contests determined whether the Republicans would maintain control of Congress or if the Democrats would regain power in one or both chambers. Delaware’s statewide offices have long been held by Democrats. Republicans entered the race hoping to break that streak, but in the months leading up to the election the Associated Press reported that the state’s Senate and House seats were expected to stay firmly Democratic. In the U.S. Senate race, incumbent Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) sought a third full term against Republican nominee Dr. Mike Katz, a former state senator. Coons won the seat with 63.57% of the vote, while Katz finished with 36.43%, according to the Delaware Department of Elections. A Republican has not won a Delaware Senate seat since 1966.In the U.S. House race, incumbent Rep. Sarah McBride (D-Del.) sought a second term against Republican nominee Joe Arminio. McBride won with 64.34%, while Arminio received 35.66% — a 7-point increase for McBride’s margin of victory since her election in 2024.Delaware voters also elected several statewide executive offices, including attorney general, treasurer and auditor of accounts. In the attorney general’s race, Kathy Jennings won by 27.24 points, winning over 63% of the vote. In the treasurer’s race, Democrat Ted Lauzen faced off against Republican Michael Ramone, with Lauzen winning by just under 25 points. In the auditor of accounts race, Democrat Lydia York won, with 60.39% of the vote.In the General Assembly, about half of the 21 state Senate seats and all 41 state House seats were on the ballot. Democrats maintained their majority in the state Senate, holding 15 seats to Republicans’ six. In the state House, Democrats increased their majority to 30 out of 41 seats, flipping three seats to bring the number of Republican-controlled seats to 11.Across the country, Democrats emerged victorious, taking control of both the U.S. House and Senate. As of Thursday around 2 p.m., 36 U.S. House races have yet to be called, but NBC News projects that Democrats will finish the midterms with 259 seats, which would be an 83-seat majority. Until Senator- and Representative-Elects are sworn in in January, Republicans will continue controlling 218 seats while Democrats will control 214, with 218 needed for a majority.Mahkieb Booker is a local community activist who was present at the state’s Democratic party election night watch party in Wilmington. “It’s electric, man,” Booker said when describing the environment of the room. “This is my first time being in something like this, and to watch the party here and see the Democrats smash them, it’s a joy, man.” Ciara Gustin, a junior at the university studying media communication, was also present at the event. When asked what she thought, she described the environment as “bustling.”“There’s a lot of people, a lot of warm faces, smiles, reunions with other people who may have lost primaries,” Gustin said. Gustin noted that the night was a celebration, but emphasized her hope that this energy would carry over into working alongside people with different perspectives.“I don’t think democracy thrives in polarization,” Gustin said. “As students, it’s our responsibility to exercise our right in democracy, and that means coming together despite our diverse opinions.” The Delaware Republican watch party was less celebratory. Republican candidates and voters expressed frustration at a lack of support from Delaware Republican Party leadership and low Republican turnout. In his concession speech, Delaware state Senate candidate Chris Rowe stated that only 44% of Delaware Republicans had cast a vote this cycle, though it is unclear where the figure came from.“Low voter turnout is a warning that our civic life needs strengthening,” Katz said, who addressed audience members after losing to Coons. “Restoring faith in democracy requires involvement.” Audience members also voiced concerns about the implications of a divided federal government.“I have a feeling we’re gonna have a two year standstill,” Charles Sherberger, brother-in-law of Penny Kubin, the Republican candidate for Delaware’s 27th House district, said. “Nothing’s gonna happen. I think it’s just going to be stalemate the whole way for the next two years.”Voters will come back out to the polls in 2028 to elect a new slate of federal and state legislators, as well as the next U.S. president.</div></body>
